Hibiscus (Hibiscus Sabdariffa)

These beautiful flowers are not just for adornment. The produce a wonderful aromatic infusion. It’s fruity and refreshing flavor is a delight that is enjoyed hot or iced. It is packed with vitamin C and antioxidants that may help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and fight those harmful free-radicals.+


Hibiscus is naturally low in calories and is caffeine-free. According to the USDA Nutrient Database, it has a good supply of vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and zinc, B-vitamins-niacin and folic acid. It is a good source of anthocyanins, which may may help manage blood pressure, the common cold, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).


These anthocyanocides, and flavonoids play an essential part in enhancing skin health by protecting it from free-radical damage and delaying premature skin aging. At the same time, its anti-inflammatory effects reduce inflammation and heal skin redness.


It is considered a medicinal food because of its wonderful therapeutic benefits. It has become a popular beverage throughout the world and its flowers have various names including “Roselle”.


Hibiscus infusion is also known as Agua de Jamaica. It is prepared by infusing the flowers into boiling water.

After it infuses for at least 10 minutes, strain and compost the flowers. I like to add them my smoothies!


Simple Hot Infusion:


  • For every cup of water, use 1-2 tsp dried Hibiscus flowers. Or 1oz flower per quart of water.
  • Heat water in a pot until it just comes to a boil.
  • Scoop your hibiscus flowers into the pot and cover to submerge and to prevent any volatile oils from escaping.
  • Steep for 10 minutes or up to 1 hour and strain.
  • Sweeten with honey if desired.
     

Simple Cold Infusion

  • Simply follow the directions on making your hot infusion
  • Once it’s at room temperature you may stored in the fridge.


Hibiscus Sangria Recipie

A non-alcoholic beverage that your guests will love!

  • Follow the directions for a cold infusion and store in the fridge.
  • Once cold, add pieces of fruit such as orange, frozen berries, peaches, and a mint sprig.
  • Let it infuse for a few hours in the fridge. Serve over ice!
